I hate what these people posted as well, but can you just ignore all the white people who complemented the photo and still say white people are racist? And just so you know, I’m black.

So it doesn’t matter that they are being so racist against this wonderful Black man’s cosplay! THEY GOT CALLED RACIST!!!! BOO HOOOOOOO!!!!

Marvel’s whole cosplay thing lately has been great. And anyone can cosplay whomever they want. Who is actually objecting to this? I don’t pretend to know everything or anything about the motivations of cosplay, but far down on the list is “looking exactly like the character”. Maybe he wants to feel like the Sorcerer Supreme.
But here’s the thing, Facebook ruffians: Marvel chose this dude, and promoted his wicked-cool costume. Your collective opinions mean nothing, you understand nothing, and you’ll never convince a world that’s smarter than you that you matter. I take some comfort in that. But you still make me sick.
There’s a whole other commentary here about reverse-white-defense and racism in geek culture, but all I’m equipped to speak on right now is that you’re not even expected to look exactly like your cosplay, so these people are more than nitpickers. They’re likely looking for an excuse to say, “People shouldn’t be black,” and they’re substituting “Doctor Strange,” and hoping no one will notice.
And in one of the additional posts, the black poster’s “defense” of “white people” weirds me out, because that poster expects it to count for double, or something. As if, when I post feminist stuff, my opinion counts twice as much. Yeah, not how it works.
